Off-Cycle Recruiting
Due to study abroad I will have an extremely long winter break (Off December 1-Early April) next academic year. I am a sophomore at a non-target albeit very prestigious LAC (think Claremont McKenna, Middlebury, Williams). I have a strong GPA and I think that I'll probably land an okay SA27 IB gig, but I'd really like to see if I can strengthen my spot to re-recruit for FT during this time. Does anyone have any insight into how BBs, EBs, and UMM firms handle this? I know I've seen a few off-cycle interns at a number of firms, and I'd like to be prepared.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, off-cycle recruiting can be a strategic move, especially with the extended winter break you have. Here's what you need to know:
Off-Cycle Internships: Many BBs, EBs, and UMM firms do offer off-cycle internships, but the availability and structure vary. These opportunities are often more common in Europe and Asia, but some U.S. offices may also have openings, especially if they have unfilled spots or need additional support.
Networking is Key: To secure an off-cycle internship, you'll need to network aggressively. Reach out to alumni, professionals at target firms, and anyone in your network who can provide insights or referrals. Informational interviews can be a great way to get your foot in the door.
Timing and Applications: Start reaching out and applying as early as possible. Some firms may not formally advertise off-cycle roles, so proactive outreach is crucial. Highlight your availability during the winter break and your willingness to contribute immediately.
Preparation: Be ready to discuss your skills, experiences, and why you're interested in an off-cycle role. Firms will expect you to hit the ground running, so brush up on technical skills and industry knowledge.
Target Firms: While BBs and EBs may have limited off-cycle spots, UMM firms and boutiques might be more flexible. These firms often have rolling recruitment processes and may be more open to accommodating your timeline.
Leverage Your SA27 Internship: If you secure an SA27 IB gig, use it as a stepping stone. Perform well, build relationships, and express interest in off-cycle opportunities to your managers or HR contacts.
By strategically networking, preparing thoroughly, and targeting the right firms, you can maximize your chances of landing an off-cycle internship and strengthening your position for full-time recruiting.
