Off Season Internship

OK I recently applied for an offcycle internship at Goldman in Houston and I have not heard anything for them. Granted, there was no open position on Goldman's website for the Houston office but application allowed me to apply anyways so I did. (It said they will contact me once the position opens up)

So, I was thinking if it was ok if I could call the Houston office and ask them if they have any open positions and see if they would give me a chance. You guys think this is a good idea? I really want to work there. Always been passionate about financial sector (i'm an economics major)

Also, I have a weak GPA so I really want to woo them with my attitudes and passions.

I want make sure I dont cross the line from passionate into restraining order.

So...the online method of submitting resumes to GS is worthless. You'd have better success folding your resume into paper airplanes and throwing them off a tall building. You need a contact in the company. You really ought to have a contact in the Houston office, if that's where you want to be. They list off-cycle internship on the website but don't think that they actually exist in every office. It is very unlikely that you'd be picked up as an off-cycle intern.
You're a rising sophomore, correct? They're not going to pick up someone who has just completed one year of school to be an IBD intern. Even a rising junior (fresh and soph years completed) is incredibly doubtful. They want rising seniors. They interview rising seniors. And it's very tough to get in even at that main entry point. If you were to speak to someone in the Houston office today, they'd tell you to focus on getting your GPA up as high as possible. Then to focus on finding a decent internship next summer, perhaps with an oil company in the finance dept. Get involved with the student investment fund at your school. UH has the energy finance degree concentration, they have the honors business degree program, get involved in those. The reality is that a rising soph with a weak GPA and no connections, who just submitted his resume via gs.com has zero chance of getting anything but an automated response 3 months down the road saying thanks but no dice. If you're truly passionate, you'll have the patience and make the efforts that I listed above. You won't get into an IBD internship right now, but it's possible that 2 years from now you might.
