PE recruiting post MBA

Hi Folk,

Hope you all are well. I feel a little uncertain with the bonuses being out and I want to reach out to the community for some guidance.

Truth be told we were severely underpaid at my bank. I am tired of working so much and being told I’m one of the best and then not receiving the comp / ranking.

Having said and the fact that I’m burnt out from the repetitive nature of the job, I am considering MBA. I have done banking for 6 years now and I want to break into PE, hopefully as a senior associate. Was wondering what the odds for that were and if it were possible to get into PE with a banking background post MBA.

Thank you so much in advance!

Breaking into PE post-MBA with a banking background is definitely possible, and your six years of banking experience can be a strong asset. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key insights:

  1. Odds of Breaking into PE Post-MBA:

    • Many PE firms actively recruit post-MBA candidates for senior associate roles. Your banking background, especially with six years of experience, positions you well for these opportunities.
    • However, the competition is fierce, and firms often prioritize candidates with prior PE experience. If you lack direct PE experience, you’ll need to highlight transferable skills and demonstrate a strong understanding of the PE landscape.
  2. Targeting the Right MBA Programs:

    • Attending a top MBA program (Top 7 or M7 schools) significantly increases your chances of landing a PE role. These programs have strong alumni networks and on-campus recruiting opportunities with PE firms.
    • Use the MBA to build relationships with PE recruiters, alumni in the industry, and classmates who may have PE connections.
  3. Positioning Yourself for PE:

    • Highlight your deal experience, financial modeling skills, and ability to work under pressure.
    • If possible, focus on networking with PE professionals before and during your MBA to build relationships and gain insights into the recruiting process.
    • Consider targeting middle-market (MM) or smaller funds, as they may be more open to candidates without prior PE experience compared to mega-funds.
  4. Challenges to Be Aware Of:

    • Without prior PE experience, you may face skepticism from recruiters. Be prepared to address why you’re transitioning into PE and how your banking experience aligns with the role.
    • The recruiting process for PE post-MBA can be intense and highly structured, so start preparing early.
  5. Alternative Paths:

    • If breaking into PE directly post-MBA proves challenging, consider roles in corporate development, strategy, or other buyside roles (e.g., hedge funds or VC) as stepping stones.
    • Some candidates also explore pre-MBA PE roles to strengthen their profile before applying to business school.

In summary, your banking background and MBA aspirations align well with a transition to PE, but success will depend on targeting the right programs, networking effectively, and positioning yourself as a strong candidate. Good luck!
