Picking a Vertical as a Summer Analyst

Im currently a summer analyst interning at a BB. In my group, there are various verticals and those that return full-time are placed to specialize in one of those verticals. So obviously, it's really important to get a lot of exposure in the vertical you are interested in during your internship.

My question, which I am sure many other Summer Analysts are facing as well, is what criteria should I be looking at when choosing which vertical Im most interested in?

Of course you can look at which vertical you find most interesting, or which one is the best social fit, but what other criteria should someone in my position look into. For example, how do you evaluate the exit opps of a given vertical. Just really lost and dont want to make a mistake in the vertical I focus the most time on.

God's sanest cokehead

Deal flow, recent senior hires/fires, and the people as a whole. Look at what past people in the group have exited to in recent years too.

I can't overstate the importance of going with the group with the best people, though

In a similar position- wanted to ask how would you go about getting to know the culture/ people of the group before joining.

Would networking and coffee chats a couple of months before the programme be a good way of finding out ? Or will that be excessive or annoy them ? Because the teams also have to rank their intern preferences so I’m guessing this is one way to stand out and get your desired group ?

Honestly, do some linkedin stalking. I know people say not to judge a book by its cover but like 90% of the time you can just look at someone's background & profile pic and know what type of person they are.

I assume you mean doing this ahead of the internship. If that is what you mean, I'd say no. Network with groups during your internship. Not only does doing it beforehand kinda blow out the steam too early but it shows you're not even giving xyz groups a chance/too invested into xyz groups. 10 weeks is plenty of time to feel out groups and then get cozy with who you want to. Good luck

People are confusing groups with verticals here lol. What BB are you at that is making you guys specialize in a vertical as a first year?? Ive never heard of any banks doing this, you usually start to specialize later on in your associate year.
