Picking Your Work Battles

I don't struggle with many things these days but figuring out how and when to stick up for myself is definitely still one of them.At this point in my career I have a few years of experience split between a few firms so I have a good sense of how things work. At my last firm I always fought my battles when I felt I needed to stick up for myself. Because of that no one gave me shit but it made things difficult in the long run and I didn't like how some relationships developed. At my new firm I decided to change all of that. I do as I'm told and take it on the chin. Because of this I'm well liked and have great relationships but it burns me up inside and I just can't be a pushover forever.I'm really here to ask if anyone has any advice on this? I don't want to be that guy but I definitely want to be respected. Thanks for any comments in advance.
