Plan B - Merchant banking

Went in to this place in Jersey tonight for some steak and there he was... a retired banker hittin on the bartender. He told me you get in and get out; as Uncle Eddie advises. He happens to own over 100 horses in jersey and I guess the guy took a liking when I just sat there and listened to him blabble about himself for an hr.

He asked me if I was just floundering around Wall Street or if I had solid connections. To which fortunately I can say I know a handful of bankers. Then this guy goes on to tell me M&A is great and Goldman is great but if it don't work out that way you must have a plan B. To which he told me mine will be Merchant banking.

How much can a Merchant Banker pull? I mean this guy was talking in the millions per year "easily just as with trading or the buyside". This true? Merchant Banking all that? doesnt it involve some M&A as well?
