Please rank the following schools..
I'll be going on exchange in the coming academic year (I go to college outside of the US) and I'm currently in the process of choosing schools.
Although I realize that none of these are targets per se, I would like to get a general feel for how they stack up in the minds of recruiters and particularly those already in banking.
So here are the schools, would appreciate it if you could rank them numerically based off of what you've observed:
Tufts
UVA
McGill
University of Western Ontario
University of Toronto
University of Edinburgh
King's College London
I do realize that the location of where one ultimately wants to work should be factored in here, but I've yet to decide although I'm leaning towards Hong Kong/Asia in general. So just rank them based on how they would be perceived in the US, given that most BB are based in the US and focus their recruiting there anyway.
This is an open forum, however I would appreciate it if only those who have had prior experience in recruiting or understand a lot about the recruiting process comment. Thanks a lot!
From those schools I believe only UVA is considered a target
Yea UVA is the only target.
Tufts is not bad, but not a target.
uva is definitely the biggest feeder among those you listed.
western ontario is also a target; mcgill depending on the bank, but less so
Kings probably fairs pretty well in London.
UVA gets recruited reasonably heavily but I think the bulk of the winning candidates come from the school of commerce (McIntyre or however it's spelled).
Make sure to read up on your work eligibility if you are not a US citizen. Being foreign is a disadvantage during New York recruiting and it takes a lot of work to line up Asia opportunities from the US.
Thanks for the response guys.
It appears as though UVa is the only target out of the batch.
Just two follow up questions:
I was always under the impression (although I know this isn't always true) that the private education system was better than the public as a whole. Would my academic experience at Tufts be more fulfilling than that of UVa? I get the sense that i'll become more of a number at UVa than at Tufts, given that the student population there is so much greater.
Also, would attending a regional best be better than attending a target school that isn't ranked amongst the highest in the nation?
This question refers to picking McGill over say UVa or Tufts. Would attending the "Harvard of Canada" be more beneficial than choosing an otherwise equally good school but considered average in its home country?
Saying you're going to the Harvard of Canada is kind of like saying you won the gold in the special olympics. UVA is a target, McGill is overhyped, but still places well. If you want US BB, then UVA, then McGill are the best options.
The thing is... a year of study abroad likely won't benefit your candidacy to the degree that the brand of the host institution would get you a job in banking.
Good point but I'd also like to pick an institution that would be looked upon highly by recruiters in the future, should the topic of my exchange study/educational background come up. I figure it can only help
Anyone else out there have an opinion? Thanks
Have you looked at the list of Corporate sponsors for UVa..GS, JPMorgan, Merril, Citi, Macy's, Rolls Royce, KPMG, PWC, Dean Witt. Their recruiters compete for a place at the job fair! They are recruiting very heavily because UVa alums are shining on the Wall Street (not snobs like ivy kids)..also, McIntire is a small school with just 600 kids..new building is amazing..better than wharton infrastucture for sure (i've seen both)..two differences btw wharton and mcintire..public/private, location (philly/c'ville) and ofcourse the prestige shit. McIntire has also transformed its courses, their 1st accounting (100 level) course uses Harvard cases for DCF, LBO analysis etc. as used by MBA schools. Their core curriculum is just amazingly intense. Choose wisely!
Some Comments about UVA:
Youre def not just a number only slightly more than 600 students in McIntire.
The new building is crazy high tech, its only 22 days old!
UVA McIntire is a top business school. Business Week ranked it Second for undergard Business Programs:

Here is the Career Center Destinations for 2007 - From the graduating class 38.5% are analyst at IBs, 6.2% are Sales and Trading and 4.9% are Investment Mangement. Thats 50% of the class doing something on wall street.

I think a visit to Charlottesville so def be in your plans to get the full experience.
Thanks for the replies.
Seems like UVA is the clear winner here. Would it be worth going to even if I were not in the business school? I'm not sure how thats going to work out at the moment, but would this change any of your assessments? How successful have non McIntire students been at getting recruited?
their e-school is ok..and the college recruiting is pretty good.lot of people do consulting and some econ majors land up i banking..
tufts is a great school.
