Prep for Houston SA roles?

Interning this summer at a top group in HOU and have been brushing up on modeling/industry knowledge to prepare. Was wondering if any analysts or incoming analysts have specific materials they found helpful particular to O&G? Would appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance

To prepare for Houston Summer Analyst (SA) roles, particularly in Oil & Gas (O&G), here’s what you should focus on based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Industry Knowledge

  • Understand the O&G Value Chain: Be clear on the differences between upstream, midstream, and downstream operations. This is fundamental for O&G banking.
  • Commodity Pricing: Stay updated on oil and gas prices and understand how they impact the industry. Analysts often need to discuss how price fluctuations affect company valuations and operations.
  • Energy vs. O&G Coverage: If your role spans general energy (including renewables), be prepared to discuss how renewables differ in terms of valuation and growth potential compared to traditional O&G.

2. Technical Skills

  • Financial Modeling: Brush up on DCF, LBO, and Comps modeling. The WSO Elite Modeling Package is highly recommended for mastering these skills.
  • O&G-Specific Metrics: Learn key industry metrics like EV/EBITDAX, reserve replacement ratio, and production costs. These are often used in O&G valuations.
  • Accounting Knowledge: Be familiar with O&G-specific accounting practices, such as successful efforts vs. full-cost accounting.

3. Interview Prep

  • Behavioral Questions: Prepare for questions about your interest in O&G and why Houston. Highlight any relevant experience or family ties to the industry, as these can set you apart.
  • Technical Questions: Expect questions on valuation methods, commodity price impacts, and possibly case studies involving O&G companies.
  • Mock Interviews: Use WSO Mock Interviews to practice both technical and behavioral questions with experienced mentors.

4. Resources

  • WSO Courses: The WSO Academy and Elite Modeling Package are excellent for building technical skills.
  • Industry Reports: Read up on recent O&G industry reports to understand market trends and challenges.
  • Networking Guide: Leverage the WSO Networking Guide to connect with professionals in Houston and gain insights into the local market.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll be well-prepared to excel in your Houston SA role. Good luck!

Go read the Deloitte energy primer / industry research reports. Will give you a broad understanding of the Energy industry. Follow that up with the WSJ / Reuters articles on the industry as well.

Hart Energy is the best for general information but so expensive.

For modeling, you’ll learn it as you do it. Just ensure your formulas make sense / just know accounting please.

Try to ask all your questions in one go, don’t ask me every 15 minutes. I’d rather sit down for 30 mins and answer all in one shot.
