Private Credir Summer Intern - Should I rerecruit for IB?

Hey guys. I recently signed for my 2025 SA position at a BDC firm in Dallas. It’s mostly private credit with a bit of private equity exposure. However, I’m nervous this will pidgeon hole me in private credit as I won’t have any investment banking experience and am also concerned pay may be below market in the long run. I think I’m going to rerecruit my summer year. My school has a strong presence in the texas area and I am in their IB/PE program.

Does anyone have any advice on if I should stay private credit or try to rerecruit for IB and if so, what will my chances be of actually landing a position.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a Private Credit Summer Analyst position to Investment Banking (IB) is a feasible path, especially if you're concerned about being pigeonholed early in your career. Here are some points to consider:

  1. Experience and Skillset: Private credit will give you a solid foundation in analyzing credit risk, structuring deals, and understanding leveraged finance, all of which are valuable in IB. However, if you're aiming for a broader exposure to different industries and transaction types (like M&A, IPOs), IB might be more aligned with your goals.

  2. Recruitment Strategy: Since you're already in a program with a strong IB/PE focus and have a good network in Texas, leverage this advantage. Networking will be key. Connect with alumni, attend industry events, and reach out to professionals in IB firms. Express your interest and the skills you've acquired through your current internship.

  3. Market Trends and Long-Term Goals: Consider the market trends in IB and Private Credit. While IB generally offers a broader skill set for finance careers, Private Credit is growing and can also offer lucrative opportunities, especially in niche markets.

  4. Preparation for IB Interviews: If you decide to re-recruit for IB, focus on refining your technical skills, particularly in financial modeling and valuation. Utilize resources like WSO's Investment Banking Interview Prep to ensure you're well-prepared.

  5. Evaluate Compensation and Career Trajectory: While IB might offer higher initial pay and bonuses, consider the work-life balance and long-term career paths available in both fields. Private Credit might offer a more balanced lifestyle compared to the demanding hours in IB.

In conclusion, if you feel strongly about gaining a broader experience in finance and are prepared to handle the rigorous lifestyle of IB, re-recruiting could be a beneficial move. However, ensure you're making an informed decision by speaking to mentors and professionals in both fields.
