Quant Finance Masters for IB

Hi everyone I have a question regarding if IB recruiting will consider my application from a quant finance masters. Specifically, I have been admitted to CMU MSCF along with a few others and intend on going as ideally I would like to find a role in sell-side QR. However, I understand that recruiting for these positions is challenging given the math and programming needed and want to have the potential to work in traditional finance too. For background,  I previously interned in IB at BB during my undergrad before deciding to try and switch to quant roles and hence applied for masters. Any advice or feedback is very much appreciated :)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing a Quant Finance Master's like CMU's MSCF can open doors to both quant roles and traditional finance, but there are key considerations:

  1. IB Recruiting from Quant Finance Programs: While quant finance programs like CMU MSCF are primarily tailored for roles in quantitative research, trading, and risk management, they can still be a viable pathway to investment banking. Your prior IB internship at a BB is a significant advantage, as it demonstrates relevant experience and interest in traditional finance. However, you’ll need to clearly articulate your story—why you pursued a quant finance degree and how it complements your IB aspirations.

  2. Challenges in Switching Back to IB: Transitioning from a quant-focused program to IB may require extra effort in networking and positioning yourself as a strong candidate. Highlight transferable skills such as financial modeling, programming, and analytical expertise, which are valuable in IB roles. Additionally, focus on building relationships with alumni and professionals in IB to strengthen your network.

  3. Sell-Side QR vs. Traditional IB: If your primary goal is sell-side QR, the CMU MSCF program is an excellent choice, as it is highly regarded in the quant finance space. However, if you want to keep IB as a backup, ensure you actively participate in finance-related clubs, case competitions, and networking events during your program to maintain visibility in the IB recruiting pipeline.

  4. Recruiting Strategy: Apply broadly to both quant and IB roles, leveraging your unique background. Some firms value candidates with diverse skill sets, especially in areas like derivatives, structured products, or technical roles within IB. Be prepared to explain your pivot from quant to IB convincingly during interviews.

In summary, your background and the CMU MSCF program provide a strong foundation for both quant and traditional finance roles. Success will depend on how well you position yourself, network, and tailor your story to align with the specific role you’re targeting.
