Questions about industry drivers

For so long, have been confused about how to figure out the drivers of a company. People often say to read industry primers and what not, but find it super hard to get broad access to these documents. Other have suggested reading the 10k's for a couple of pure play companies in that industry to understand the main drivers - is this really the best way to go about it? Broad level goal is for if someone asks me what the drivers are for x industry, just want to be able to speak coherently about it. Obviously am not aiming to know the drivers of every single industry, but a general handful. Anything helps!

I don't think there's a neat, packaged solution unfortunately. But three ideas that might help (assuming you have the right access) would be (A) Initiating coverage reports for specific companies and looking in particular at the valuation section; (B) looking through models of companies in the sector your team has on file and seeing how they're built up; and by far the best (C) ask - your VPs+ should definitely know or have a good sense, and if you're outside the industry, ask at those networking calls / coffees - I'm mid-seniority and would love it if someone asked this rather than about the culture or dealflow for the 1,000th time
