Quick way to pull Fair value and Carrying amount of long-term debt from 10Ks?

This is for calculating capital structure, not for calculating WACC (where my understanding is we should not use fair value of debt). Is there a fast (and preferably free) way to pull the fair value and carrying amount of long-term debt? Going through 10Ks gets annoying when doing comps analysis for many companies.

I know Capital IQ and Bloomberg report capital structures, but the only place I see the fair value of LT debt being reported is in the 10K.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on pulling the fair value and carrying amount of long-term debt from 10-Ks:

  1. 10-K Reports:

    • The fair value and carrying amount of long-term debt are typically reported in the notes to the financial statements within the 10-K report. Look for sections titled "Debt," "Long-term Debt," or "Notes to Financial Statements."
  2. Automated Tools:

    • While Capital IQ and Bloomberg are excellent resources, they are not free. However, they do provide comprehensive data on capital structures, including the fair value of long-term debt.
  3. Free Resources:

    • For a free alternative, you might consider using the SEC's EDGAR database. It allows you to search for and access 10-K filings directly. Although this still requires manual extraction, it is a cost-effective solution.
  4. Financial Modeling Templates:

    • Utilize financial modeling templates that can help streamline the process of extracting and organizing data from 10-Ks. WSO offers various financial modeling templates that might be useful.
  5. WSO Resources:

    • WSO provides a range of financial modeling courses and resources that can help you become more efficient in extracting and analyzing financial data. Consider exploring these to enhance your skills and speed up the process.

In summary, while there isn't a completely automated free tool for extracting this specific data, leveraging the SEC's EDGAR database and financial modeling templates can help streamline the process. For more advanced and automated solutions, paid services like Capital IQ and Bloomberg are recommended.
