Recruiting for Banks who don't come to your school

Hi Guys,

So right now I'm currently a junior at a target school and had a few questions regarding recruiting. A large number of firms come to my school and do OCR but a good amount of firms still do not.

Pretty much every kid at my school wants to do banking so the competition is intense with the bank's that do come and hard to differentiate themselves because a large amount of kids have alumni connections through business fraternities which I am not apart of.

I wanted to see what is the best way to apply and get interviews at the banks who do not come to my school and when I do not have any connections at these places. Trying to spread my net wide and greatly appreciate any advice anyone may have to offer. Thanks

Reach out to as many people at as many of those banks as you can. Email, call, meet in person, do whatever it takes to get your name out there. Given the intensity of the competition, others at your school are likely doing the same, so make sure you establish good connections with industry folks. And go beyond a simple "tell me about your day-to-day responsibilities" and that kind of crap. Have good, memorable conversations with people that will make them want to keep talking to you. The most important thing you can do at this point is to be likable enough that people will want to keep your info on file. And after you speak with each person you connect with, ask them to introduce you to other people at their firm. Since you're a junior and the recruiting season's already been well under way, you don't have too much time left to make an impression, so I'd recommend starting as soon as possible.

From your past threads looks like you go to NYU. Almost every BB, EB, and MM bank come to NYU or at least have a posting on NYU's career website. The only reputable ones that don't that I can think of are DB, Jefferies, Harris Williams, and Centerview. What banks are you specifically talking about?

If there is a specific bank you are looking at, I would reach out to alums there. There are still plenty of NYU alums at DB and JEF since they used to do OCR. In the rare case that there are no NYU alums then you should try to email a VP or Associate using the company's email format and try to set up a call or a meeting. Would start as soon as possible if recruiting for SA positions.

dinomonstermajor banks do not do OCR at my school

Well broseph, this makes your school what's called a "non-target."

Someone mentioned that this hasn't been covered before - it has been, still is, and likely will be the topic of much ado for some time to come. There's plenty of material about non-target recruiting, etc on here and elsewhere.

Lastly, as was also mentioned before, networking is the key to succeeding here. You will also want to look with boutique firms in the cities you're targeting, as they sometimes take online applications for SA.

It should be noted by the OP, however, that online applications are generally a black hole.

in it 2 win it

Just pointing out that my school wouldnt necessarily be considered nontarget. Kids do go to top banks and big 4 firms at the end of their junior and senior years but most seem to be tech or engineering related jobs. Any specific advice on networking?

To clarify, when people say non-target on here, they mean non-target for FO roles like IB / S&T.

i'm sorry, let me rephrase it. so jp morgan, ubs, goldman all have job postings at my school. but i am looking at my career center calendar and it seems that they only recruited technology jobs in january and february (finance jobs were only recruited in september). it would be strange to attend their info sessions for those positions if i am looking for non-tech related jobs?

You wouldn't look silly, but it's not likely to be your fast track to an IB job. Try reaching out to alumni that are already in FO roles at banks, that's going to be your best bet.
