Recruiting for London

Hey guys, I am an international student and I will be joining a non target russell group uni in England for my MSc. I recently joined a LMM PE firm based in the US as an intern. I will be working remotely for them. So I wanted to know how should plan my recruitment process for IB and PE. Or should I consider the big 4 deal teams considering my non target background. Any advice will be appreciated.

To maximize your chances of breaking into IB or PE in London, here’s a structured plan based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Leverage Your MSc Program

  • Target Networking Opportunities: While your university is non-target, being part of the Russell Group still gives you some credibility. Attend all networking events, career fairs, and workshops hosted by your school.
  • Focus on Top UK Schools for Masters: If you can, aim for schools like LSE, LBS, Oxbridge, or Imperial for future programs, as they are highly regarded in London recruiting.

2. Optimize Your CV

  • Highlight your LMM PE internship prominently, as it’s a strong differentiator. Emphasize deal experience, financial modeling, and any relevant achievements.
  • Tailor your CV to the UK market. Familiarize yourself with how CVs are structured in London, as they may differ from US formats.

3. Timing is Critical

  • Start applying as early as possible. Many banks and firms in London recruit on a rolling basis, so being early increases your chances.
  • Keep track of deadlines for IB and PE applications. Missing them can be a dealbreaker.

4. Focus on IB First

  • Breaking into PE directly from a non-target background is challenging. Use IB as a stepping stone, as it’s the most common route to PE.
  • Apply to BBs, EBs, and MMs. Don’t overlook smaller boutique firms, as they can provide valuable experience and open doors later.

5. Consider Big 4 Deal Teams

  • If IB opportunities don’t materialize, Big 4 deal teams (Transaction Services, Corporate Finance, or Valuations) are a solid alternative. They offer exposure to deals and can serve as a pathway to IB or PE later.

6. Networking is Key

  • While networking isn’t as critical in the UK as in the US, it’s still valuable. Attend firm events, connect with alumni, and reach out to professionals on LinkedIn.
  • Focus on building genuine relationships rather than cold emailing en masse.

7. Prepare for Online Tests and Interviews

  • Many UK firms require online assessments (maths, verbal reasoning, logic). Practice these tests extensively.
  • For interviews, focus on technical skills, behavioral questions, and your story. Be ready to explain why you’re transitioning from the US to the UK market.

8. Apply Broadly

  • Submit at least 10-15 applications to increase your chances. It’s a numbers game, especially with a non-target background.

9. Master’s Program as a Backup

  • If you struggle to secure a role, consider pursuing another master’s at a top UK school (LSE, LBS, Oxbridge, Imperial, Warwick). This can significantly improve your recruiting prospects.

By following these steps, you can strategically position yourself for IB or PE roles in London. Good luck!
