Recruiting for Private Funds Group/Placement Agents

Hey everyone - wanted to post on this forum to get insights from those who had any. Currently, a rising senior interning at an AM within the PE co-investment and GP allocation division, managing around $10bn. I am looking to make the move into a private funds group of an investment bank or a boutique placement agency. My question is mainly about how recruiting for this works straight out of university for FT 2025 start. Timelines, interview process, and any general insights would be super helpful. Thank you so much!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights into the recruiting process for Private Funds Groups/Placement Agents:

Timelines

  • Full-Time Recruiting Start: The process for full-time recruiting can be less structured compared to summer analyst (SA) recruiting. Firms often do not have a specific start date and may begin recruiting after they have a clearer picture of their hiring needs, which typically happens after summer interns accept or reject their offers.
  • Networking Events: Some banks and boutiques may start hosting networking events as early as mid-July. These events are crucial for getting "in the loop" and being invited to the full-time recruiting processes.

Interview Process

  • Invitations: Being invited to the interview process often requires being well-networked within the industry. Many firms may only have a few openings and prefer candidates who are already familiar to them through networking events or referrals.
  • Timing: Interviews can start as early as July and may continue into September. Some firms aim to complete their recruiting process quickly, while others may extend it depending on their needs and the availability of candidates.
  • Preparation: It is essential to be well-prepared before the interview season starts. This includes having a strong understanding of the industry, the specific role, and being able to demonstrate the skills and experiences gained during internships.

General Insights

  • Networking: Networking is a critical component of the recruiting process. Attending events and making connections with professionals in the industry can significantly increase your chances of being invited to interviews.
  • Skill Demonstration: During interviews, firms will look for candidates who can demonstrate that they have been actively developing relevant skills and gaining industry knowledge during their internships.
  • Flexibility: Be prepared for a less structured and potentially fast-paced recruiting process. Flexibility and readiness to act quickly on opportunities can be advantageous.
