Career Resources
Based on the most helpful WSO content, a referral can significantly boost your chances of getting a first-round interview (R1), but it does not guarantee one, especially at competitive firms like Citi, Morgan Stanley (MS), JPMorgan (JPM), Bank of America (BoFA), Deutsche Bank (DB), and others. Here's what you need to know:
Screening Process: Even with a referral, your application will still be screened for factors like GPA, school, and relevant experience. While a strong referral can help bypass some of the initial filters, it won't completely override concerns like a low GPA or a non-target school background.
STEM Degree Advantage: Your STEM degree can work in your favor, as many firms value the analytical and quantitative skills that come with it. Highlighting this in your application and interviews can help offset other perceived weaknesses.
Alumni Referrals: Having alumni from both high school and university willing to vouch for you is a strong asset. Their advocacy can make your application stand out, but the strength of their internal reputation and how actively they push for you will matter.
Firm-Specific Variations: Some firms, like JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley, are known for being more rigid in their screening processes, even with referrals. Others, like Mizuho or BNP Paribas, might be slightly more flexible, depending on the division and location.
Action Plan:
While referrals are a powerful tool, they are not a guaranteed ticket to an interview. Focus on maximizing the impact of your application and networking efforts to improve your chances.

Never guaranteed an interview
If they're your high school buddy's then probably not, I think referrals start making a difference at the associate level and you're pretty much guaranteed an interview if a VP or Director refers you, provided they're not boutta get fired.
I would disagree. Back when I was recruiting a VP at DB referred me 3 times over 3 years and I didn’t get a R1.
was it a strong ref or just passing ur name along
I got the “you have been referred” email on all occasions and he checked in with HR re my application each time after waiting 10-14 days.
i meant was he strongly pushing for you?
