SF Nightlife Recs

For those of you in SF, these are my top spots, what are yours? SF is picking up IMO lately

I've been having a decent time lately because I shifted my expectations. Prime hours in SF are sunset to midnight; the late night scene in SF sucks and there's no food spots open really. Crowd gets cringey too.

  • Amelie on Polk St; this place has been popping off. It's run by a bunch of Italian/French guys and the crowd there is what you want; lots of folks from out of town, and non-cringey locals; peak hours are 7-11pm
  • Cafe Celeste on Union; can be good earlier in the evening as well
  • Key Klub; pretty decent, another wine bar
  • Harper & Rye; good cocktails/pool table; NY vibe
  • Bar April Jean - same owner as Harper and Rye - gets too crowded but it's an NY vibe, same owner as Harper
  • As overplayed as it as / as much as people hate it Balboa Cafe has it's time/place (did you know Gavin Newsom owns it)
  • California Wine Merchant Chestnut St; more of a date spot
  • Bar Darling Chestnut St
  • The Mission is cool too - way edgier / not the finance or Marina Crowd at all
    • Bar Part Time; house music / only beer & wine / fog machine. It's a vibe but gets sweaty
  • If Irish Pubs are your thing then Maggie McGarry is cool
  • There are 'intern' bars that I left out because i'm out of the age range now (25)
    • Monroe SF

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some nightlife recommendations and insights for San Francisco:

Key Takeaways:

  1. Prime Hours: Sunset to midnight is when SF nightlife thrives. Late-night options are limited, and food spots tend to close early.
  2. Crowd Dynamics: The vibe varies by location. Some spots cater to a more refined or out-of-town crowd, while others lean towards edgier or younger demographics.

Recommended Spots:

  • Amelie (Polk St): A lively wine bar with a mix of out-of-town visitors and non-cringey locals. Best hours: 7-11 PM.
  • Cafe Celeste (Union): Great for earlier evening outings.
  • Key Klub: A solid wine bar option.
  • Harper & Rye: Known for its cocktails and pool table, offering a New York-style vibe.
  • Bar April Jean: Shares the same owner as Harper & Rye, but can get overly crowded.
  • Balboa Cafe: A classic spot with its own charm (fun fact: owned by Gavin Newsom).
  • California Wine Merchant (Chestnut St): Ideal for a date night.
  • Bar Darling (Chestnut St): Another good option in the same area.
  • The Mission District: Offers a more edgy and diverse scene, distinct from the finance or Marina crowd.
    • Bar Part Time: Features house music, beer & wine, and a fog machine for a unique vibe.
  • Maggie McGarry's: A solid choice for Irish pub enthusiasts.

Notes:

  • Intern Bars: If you're over 25, you might want to skip these, as they cater to a younger crowd.
  • Late-Night Scene: SF's nightlife tends to wind down early, so plan accordingly.

If you're looking for a mix of refined spots, edgy vibes, or classic hangouts, these recommendations should cover a variety of preferences!

+1 for Harper & Rye and Bus Stop. Would add Shanghai Kelly's and Butter.

Funny enough, I was just in SF recently and this list lines up with what I noticed too. Amelie was packed every night I passed by, and Harper and Rye really does have that NY energy. Mission spots felt way more relaxed, especially Bar Part Time, good music and zero finance crowd vibes. If you ever add more to the list, drop some late night food ideas because that’s the one thing SF desperately needs.

Bus stop, bar darling, monaghans, pacific cocktail haven, trick dog, true laurel, mauna loa club, bar sprezz (after work), bar april jean. celeste for early sunset dates

If you prefer nyc vibey bars like I did (think bemelmans / katana kitten / angels share / bar clemente) those don't exist. also you should move back to nyc anyways unless you were stanford cs
