Shabbat
I'm honestly just curious to hear if junior bankers are able to not work during Shabbat. I have a few orthodox jewish friends who are going to a MM next summer and am curious to see if they get like protected friday evening into saturday? I'm just thinking of my own case as an intern I had gotten calls on Saturday many times.
How do jewish bankers navigate this?
I know a few people across the street who observe shabbat, analysts included. I think people are generally pretty respectful of it. Realistically, if there’s a ton of work to be done you’ll be back online after sundown Saturday so you’re really only missing half a day's work (assuming not much to be done Friday night).
Related, but have some family friends who both work in big law. When they wanted to start a family (some 20 years ago, their kids are my age) they decided to become more observant in order to get shabbat off. Have always found that pretty funny because I hated shul so much as a kid and I couldn’t understand the desire to go to shul every weekend, but I see how your priorities can change when you work 80 hours a week.
As an intern this summer I always made sure to be clear about it with every team I worked with and people were always super respectful. They often kept it in mind so that I didn't even have to bring it up. Granted they likely rely upon you more for the real job, but all the Shabbat Observant people I spoke with at the firm (analysts to MDs) said people are great about it and that sometimes you just have to work a little harder on Thursday/Sunday.
Great question, also interested to hear how other analysts have gone about this. Especially love how it was posted on Shabbat, haha.
I have low key day dreamed about converting to Judaism because of Shabbat.
I have never seen it be an issue, at any level.
I called my MD a few weeks before the internship and let him know that I'd need to be off, would make sure not to let it get in the way of my workload and would work harder Thursday, Sat night and Sunday if need be. He was like "dude, chill. we knew this when we gave the offer 12 months ago. you're good" and no one cared or said anything (to my face at least).
Being virtual made it easier - just didn't answer emails, and then got online Sat night and answered like a mad-man to make up for it. Was awkward when someone from another group emailed asking for something and didn't get back to them until 22 hours later, but worked out fine.
Hundreds of bankers, lawyers, HF analysts and everything in between keep shabbat, just gotta do better work in 6 than others do in 7 and no one will care. If you make your boss's lives easier and bring in revenue, can do whatever you want.
