Signed Offer (Contract) Got Rescinded

I had a signed contract with a major bank in the UK. 3 weeks after the graduation they inform me that I wasn't able to get a work visa hence the offer got withdrawn. I tried to see a possibility of being transferred to another country or simply asking for a deferral of the contract for a year in hopes of some changes in immigration policies ( i applied for a graduate scheme, very common in Europe), however the company was very vague about it and simply told me that they couldn't do anything at this point and said to keep it touch ( nice way for fuck off I guess).

So what do I do now? I am an international student in the USA so I applied for OPT which will only get approved in September. I guess I'm at least trying to get some work experience before going home and doing something there.

I am from non-target and got a full-time offer with a bank through the internship which I got myself and not through my school last summer. Carrer Service is shit, hence it won't be any help at all.

I have decided to take CFA level 1 since I have a lot of extra time on my hand and plan to work on 2 research papers for publication in a meantime.

I have been networking a little bit but I don't know how to make it more successful. When I call someone, we talk about them and their field and this is how it ends. Should I be simply asking about the internship opportunities they might have without trying to sound too arrogant?

Any tips on how to approach this?I am obviously late for the recruitment season for this year. I don't even care if it is IB, CF or Commercial Banking. I am just terrified to have a huge gap in my resume which might ruin my chances in the future to get into a top grad school.

yes. i have had 3 internships ( 2 at the bank) and one in hospitality ( very random, i didn't know what i wanted to do then). I also did pretty well at school, wrote an honors thesis, helped to manage an equity fund, competed in research investment competition.

sadly the vast majority of my network is in England, which is a bummer since I can't really get a job there as a result of immigration laws. I have been reaching out to alumni who work at the banks but don't really know how to approach the networking without blankly asking for a job. I am from Russia originally.

As a fellow Russian who faced a similar problem in London, I would apply to do a Master’s degree if you can; somewhere in the UK or Europe. It will help you bridge the gap on your CV, will add some credibility etc. If Master’s isn’t an option then looking for some random internship in the US might be a good idea, however it is very late now. Doing CFA might also help.

Hi there. Thank for you message on my post. You mentioned that it is worth doing a master program in Europe. From your experience, will it be easier to land a position there and change student visa to work visa? If so, what schools should I target? Im worried that due to so little experience ( just internships and mb something this year), I might not have a big shot at schools like LSE, King's College and so on.

Sorry to hear that the similar situation happened to you. No other way of saying it that it just completely sucks so best of luck to you trying to figure it out.

Are you planning on going home if nothing in Europe will work out?

Thanks!

PS I tried to PM you but for some reasons, it didn't work, hence if you want to answer in PM please feel free to do so since it was my intention anyway.
