Skills Acquired in IBD Analyst Program

Honestly, what do you guys think are the most important skills gained from doing banking for two years out of college?

Is it the "modeling skills"? Familiarity with navigating financial documents? Cultivating "endurance"? Network of other analysts/lawyers/accountants? Professional soft skills?

Or is banking more useful as a "signal" of interest/capability to buyside/PE shops?

  1. Thou shall bend over and open your asshole wide for two years to endure insurmountable pain. There will be several metallic objects thrust in there.
  2. Thou shall smile while getting cream pied on by associates, VPs, directors, executive directors, MDs, SVP, GVP, DVP, LDPs, STDs ABCs whatever position can be created
  3. Thou shall have several dentist appointments, sick grandmoms and religious festivals to go to.
  4. Thou shall not have a weekend and no personal life.
  5. Thou shall flip books and deliver them to jerk-offs above you at 3 am . Thou shall then hope for a 'tx' reply from said jerk-off.
  6. Thou shall learn how to cc, bcc, dcc, acc, occ, read receipts and other such dirty tricks with your outlook. .

A question I know the answer to already, but why does equity research get shat on so much? When I was looking for a job after undergrad, I focused on IBD and research, and I went with research because IBD sounded fucking awful. I would think I'd get more credit just for making that decision.

Seriously, the general skills learned are similar enough (ignoring the "work" done on either side), and what research associate actually believes the sell-side kool aid anyway?

ER guys still have a shitty lifestyle and get paid a lot less than bankers...

Shitty lifestyle? How man hours a week do you work in IB?

Well I haven't started yet, I'm just not sure what to put for my tag since I received the offer - sorry for misleading. What I do know is what I've heard from other Research Associates that already work there. To make it clear - I'm doing Buy side ER so the hours will only be ~50 per week, never on the weekends. The base pay is comparable to banking with a smaller bonus so I will be compensated much more hourly. Also, since I'm already working Buy side my exit opps/b-school will be of a similar caliber.

I'd like to reiterate, I haven't started yet so I only have second hand information, and I will be sure to start a IB vs. ER thread once I do (kidding.)
