Skype interview=in-person interview for Study Abroad?

Hello, I am currently a sophomore at Boston College. I am planning on studying abroad during the spring of my junior year and have a quick question.

I am definitely interested in studying abroad during my junior year, but obtaining an internship is obviously my salient goal. Would studying abroad hinder my ability to interview for that summer? I am assuming that most interviews will occur during Januray-March of that year. Do you know if most firms have accommodations set up for this situation? For example, would they offer conducting an interview using Skype? And would studying abroad really hurt my chances?

Thanks in advance

Honestly, it is worth going, but it is tough. If you go in the fall you miss out on all sorts of on campus events and networking possibilities that aren't possible from abroad etc, and many firms do first round interviews late November/early December. If you go in the spring you miss out on more interviews/superdays. I would say go in the fall, but you will have to make up for it and network your ass off in any and every way possible.

im not really sure, it seems doable but i think the people at the location id be applying for (prob. Boston/NY) would probably want to see if the firm would be a good fit for me. theres also the chance that i wont be able to get an internship with a firm that's "global" enough to have a HK location seeing as im from a non-target...

My friend who is a senior looking for FT offers was interviewing with mainly MBB like Bain, BCG, and Mckinsey while over here at their HK branches. Most of the HK branches are stocked with ex-pats and have contacts with people stateside so I'm pretty sure you can talk to the interviewers and figure out the fit.

Depends on the employer's preferences and distance. For different employers I've been flown in to interview, I've been invited to the local office and when I was in Asia myself, I was extended an offer after series of interviews via phone only.

The distance has never really been a problem - my theory is that it actually might turn out to be a good thing. If you cover the travel expenses yourself you show crazy determination, if it's a phone interview you can always have cheat notes and if it's local office or they fly you in then you just stand out as the kid to whom they had to make special arrangements (retrieval bias).

Walk in. Exchange greetings. Interviewer asks questions. You answer said questions. He asks you if you have questions for them. You respond to said question with an affirmative answer. He invites you to ask questions. You ask questions. He answers them. You get up. You thank him for the opportunity. He tells you he'll get back to you in a couple weeks. Exchange handshakes. Exchange business cards. He tells you to feel free to contact him about any other questions. You thank him again. You leave.

As mentioned earlier, 1st round is most likely over the phone.

These are some procedures that my friends went through: 1st round: Local office --> 2nd round: NY office --> offer/decline (I live in a city w/ many regional offices i.e. Chicago, Boston, LA, etc., so not a hassle to go into the local office) 1st round: Phone --> 2nd round: NY --> 3rd round: Abroad --> offer/decline 1st round: Phone --> 2nd round: NY --> 3rd round: Conference call w/ 3 HK members --> offer/decline

I'm sure there are other practices as well. I'd imagine that the firms would like to save the cost of flying you abroad if possible.

You mean will they hold-off on recruiting (a major expense on their part) until you're back?

I'll let you answer that one and draw your own conclusions. Who knows, maybe they will.

If you're going abroad I recommend you plan ahead. Some firms, most notably Goldman Sachs holds an accelerated interview process for people who will be abroad in the spring. It's doable you just have to plan ahead, network ahead and be on top of everything. Find out who does OCR. Contact HR asap.

What should I tell HR? Don't I have to get the interview first and then tell them or will it be too late by then? I'm a non target and am getting my resumes passed through my connections.....do I let them know?
