Spanish High Schooler

Hey guys, I'm completely lost.

I want to work in IB in London but I come from an middle-sized city of Spain, with a non-related family background and normal (limited tbh) financial resources. Currently I'm deciding which uni to attend to in order to increase my chances of entering right out of undergrad. Here in Spain I've been thinking of IEB, ICADE or Carlos III. I love econ and business so I'm thinking about studying ADE (BBA). I know my chances are low but at least I'll have tried. Any feedback is welcome.

If your goal is to break into Investment Banking (IB) in London, your choice of university is critical, especially coming from Spain. Here's a breakdown of your options:

  1. Spanish Universities for IB:

    • ICADE: This is the top choice for IB in Spain. It has a strong reputation domestically and dominates the Spanish IB market. However, its placement outside of Spain, particularly in London, is weaker. Networking and pedigree play a significant role here.
    • IEB: While it offers finance-focused programs, it doesn't have the same level of prestige or alumni network as ICADE.
    • Carlos III: A solid public university with a good reputation in Spain, but it doesn't have the same IB pedigree as ICADE.
  2. Challenges with Spanish Universities:

    • The Spanish IB market is small and highly elitist. Most professionals in top banks come from ICADE, ESADE, IE, or CUNEF. If you're not from one of these schools, your chances are significantly lower.
    • Spanish universities generally don't place well in London IB unless you're pursuing a master's degree at a top European school afterward.
  3. Alternative Strategy:

    • If you have the financial resources, consider applying to top UK universities like LSE, Oxbridge, Imperial, or Warwick. These schools are target universities for London IB and will significantly increase your chances.
    • If studying in the UK isn't feasible, aim to excel at ICADE or Carlos III and then pursue a master's degree at a top European school like HEC Paris, LBS, or LSE. These programs are well-regarded and can help you break into London IB.
  4. Networking:

    • Start building your network early. Use LinkedIn to connect with alumni from your chosen university who work in IB. Attend finance-related events and workshops to expand your connections.
  5. Final Advice:

    • If you're staying in Spain, ICADE is your best bet for IB. However, be prepared to work hard, network extensively, and consider a master's degree abroad to maximize your chances of breaking into London IB.

Good luck! Remember, persistence and strategic planning can make a big difference.
