S&T To IB
Is it possible to break into IB(fulltime) from S&T summer internship from a solid boutique, with coming from nontarget and not the best gpa.

I went from S&T BB to IB Boutique. Def a challenge, but as long as you have a compelling story and strong foundation then you should be fine. At the same time, I was also target with a strong gpa and the IB Boutique CEO in my interview went to my same school, and his kid is too.
is it possible for me to PM you to learn more about S&T, and how i can use that experience to get into IB
go for it
Lateraled from full time S&T at a BB to a well regarded IB boutique as an analyst. Was not at all easy. I also come from a non target, so not a lot of connections to work with initially. Took about a year of networking, prepping, and interviewing to finally get an offer. It was a seriously disheartening process at times, and I contemplated giving up at several points. It is possible, but judging by your situation, you will have to work your ass off just like I did. Have a compelling story, learn how to be personable, and know the technical aspects cold. Most people will not give you a shot, and the ones who do like you often times don’t have an opening. A lot of it is getting lucky honestly. Cast a wide net and grind it out for a while
thank you for your perspective, i had about 10 solid IB interviews ( SA 2021, and came from networking my ass off) which i failed to convert, but am really grateful that i got a S&T offer so i took it (SA 2021). But having said that I do want to do IB and having no prior IB experience how would you say I can use that experience to get into IB, what are some skills that are tranfesrabble to IB. I have done a wide range of courses and casestudies
i will be covering equity desk. My goal isnt a BB its to land at a good MM since i know BB will be hard asf coming from non-target and low gpa (3.3).
You could always try to lateral internally from S&T your junior summer to full time in IB if you let HR know early in the summer. It happened at my BB. The downside risk here is that you’re likely giving up your return offer to S&T if it doesn’t work out with IB.
Can I ask if you tried to lateral internally, and if so, what challenges you faced there? From what I have gathered, and I may be way off here, but going S&T->IB as an external lateral is much more challenging than internally at your bank (your bank would rather retain talent than lose you to Goldman or JP or MS)
also lateralled from s&t to IB at a BB. Have worked in s&t for 4 years, was early promoted and was in my final year of asso. Internal transferred to IB Cut me back to asso 1. Also took me 1 year, super challenging process. Interviewed at several BB before finally landing an offer internally
Also OP, your respective S&T desk can matter quite a bit in this process. If you have a good story to tell you can sell almost anything, but it is much harder to convince people that you want to switch to M&A from say, vanilla rates flow, than it is to switch from high yield research to restructuring for example. Certain transitions are more seamless in that way. A big component of many of the interviews and networking calls I had was explaining the relevant skills for a banking role I had built
what desks would u say would be the best to be on to make the switch to IB?
curious - why the move from S&T to IB?
