Stay With My Internship or Find Another?
I'm currently a sophomore and have just landed a boutique investment banking internship for this next semester. If I'm planning to go through recruitment next school year, would it look more impressive to stay with this current internship through the summer to have more responsibilities with this firm, or should I find a different boutique investment bank internship so I can have two on my resume?
Unless the boutique you are working for next semester does not give you meaningful work or turns out to be not very legit, I think it'd be best to stay with your current internship so you can gain more responsibilities. By staying at the one internship longer, maybe you will get to work on pitches that turn to active engagements which will allow you to see the whole advisory process from pitching to due diligence and closing.
Without more comprehensive information about your situation I will say this:
If you come from a strong school and are confident about your GPA, then, given a decent experience during the spring I would recommend staying for the increased responsibility as you will be able to speak about it in your future interviews.
On the flip side, if your school or GPA is weaker, then getting 2 IB internships will be the better bet. The people screening resumes are generally not spending time reading them closely, and will instead see that you were vetted and spent time at two separate banks.
To put it succinctly, if you do not expect trouble getting in the door for interviews for your junior summer, consider staying, if you are worried, then know that two separate internships looks better to the average recruiter/HR. I have more than a few stories of interviewers ignoring details on my own resume....
Thanks for the reply! Would it be possible to separate the internship into two entries that say "Spring Analyst" and "Summer Analyst" to show distinction between the time periods for the responsibilities and tasks completed?
