Stout 2023
I just signed Stout and wondered if anyone had any insight into the deal flow, culture, or benefits of the firm. From my networking, everyone seemed like great people but coming from a non-target, I didn't have the chance to ask alumni about anything specific.
NY btw
Assuming you're referring to their IB group. Relative to the overall firm, the IBD is relatively small but rapidly growing. It seems to have been a focus for the firm over the last several years as they have recruited several high-level MD's to lead the group. Certainly on the lower-end of the "LMM" spectrum, but I can see them making strides up the ladder during the forseeable future. A huge plus is the recent investment from Audax, which is Stout's first outside capital partner. Expecting to see the firm do great things over the next 5 years.
Interned with their BV group in the summer and received return offer. Can confirm that since the investment from the PE firm, the firm's been looking to grow very quickly, phasing out older, more risk-averse shareholders. Although I would say valuation still remains Stout's bread and better. They will likely focus on getting high profile deals/engagements. One thing I would say though, comp is still an issue that's been driving employee turnover.
What makes you say that about their comp? Do they actually under comp or is it just valuation folks wanting IB pay? I've heard their valuation comp is extremely competitive for valuation.
People do compare valuation to IB, just because it's sorta the exit for many. It's comes down to the perceived effort-to-reward ratio. You're working long hours, especially when turnover is high or your office becomes understaffed, but getting paid much less (relative to other front/middle office jobs not just IB). Yes Stout's comp is competitive in the world of valuation, but if you look at the effort-reward ratio of other roles, there're certainly better opportunities out there, which is a key reason that's driving turnover to start with. Also turnover is not just an issue at Stout, other valuation shops (eg HL) are also seeing significantly higher turnover too.
Did you lateral from the business valuation role to IB following the internship? I just had my final valuation interview and it went well, but am ultimately looking for an IB role. Is it pretty attainable to convert to IB from the BV internship once your on board?
