Street IB Analyst Bonus

Nowadays, what is considered analyst bucketing on the street for bonus for ANL 1/2/3?

My shot at ANL1 is

Bottom: <50k

Middle: 50k-70k

Top: 70k+

When I mean Street, referring to the BB/EB/MMs on Vault since industry-focused boutiques and lower middle market banks are too variable.

So basically, a mid bucket ANL1 at a mid-BB (BOFA/Barclays/Citi) in one of their middle performing groups would be in the mid bucket street range of 50k-70k.

Just genuinely curious with all the recent ups and downs in the industry over the last 5 years with COVID / post-COVID (e.g., 2021) and the base changes where things shake out.

Can edit this post to adjust the initial ANL1 range (am I too high / low or just right) and will add ANL2/3 too.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of analyst bucketing for bonuses across the street (BB/EB/MMs):

Analyst 1 (ANL1):

  • Bottom Bucket: $50k
  • Middle Bucket: $50k-$70k
  • Top Bucket: $70k+

For mid-BBs like BofA, Barclays, and Citi, a mid-performing group would typically fall into the middle bucket range of $50k-$70k. This aligns with recent data showing mid-bucket bonuses for ANL1 at these banks around $50k-$60k, with top buckets reaching $70k-$75k.

Analyst 2 (ANL2):

  • Bottom Bucket: ~$40k-$50k
  • Middle Bucket: ~$55k-$75k
  • Top Bucket: ~$75k-$105k

For ANL2, mid-bucket bonuses at BBs like Barclays or Citi often hover around $65k-$75k, with top buckets reaching $100k+ at some firms.

Analyst 3 (ANL3):

  • Bottom Bucket: ~$50k-$60k
  • Middle Bucket: ~$70k-$90k
  • Top Bucket: ~$90k-$120k

ANL3 bonuses are less frequently discussed but generally follow a similar trend, with top buckets at EBs and strong-performing BB groups reaching six figures.

Industry Trends:

  • COVID/Post-COVID Impact: Bonuses saw significant variability during the pandemic, with 2021 being a standout year for higher payouts due to record deal flow. However, recent years have seen a normalization, with bonuses aligning more closely to historical averages.
  • Base Salary Adjustments: The increase in base salaries (e.g., $110k for ANL1, $125k for ANL2) has slightly compressed bonus ranges, but total compensation remains competitive.

Let me know if you'd like further adjustments or details!

Your AN1 bonuses are in the right ballpark…  maybe slightly on the high end as others have said.

AN2: Bottom ~$60k, mid $70-85, top a touch over $100k

Analyst ranges tend to be tighter across banks and frankly have not moved much the last few years since the base bump. Banks know most analysts go to the buyside and will be potential clients one day… so they try to pay steady bonuses so candidates leave with a good taste in their mouths.

You’re also so early in your career that I wouldn’t worry about a ~$10k bonus delta vs another bank. You should be focused on getting the right deal experience, being on a good team, etc. and building for the future.

Now, if you want to start talking ASO/VP/D bonuses there is a MASSIVE spread across banks. People generally care more about $$$ during these years too (wife, kids, etc) so that becomes a bigger piece of the conversation. I know some VPs at street low paying BBs that essentially have been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars less than peers over the years.
