Summer Analyst/Full-Time Mentor Pairing

It's been said several times that banks will pair a weaker analyst to a stronger associate. Does the same principle hold true for pairing Summer Analysts with their full-time mentors?

I haven't yet found out who my mentor will be but a mutual friend of my roommate and I (both the friend and my roommate are working at the same BB this summer)just got paired with a 2nd year analyst who is also in the same group, which we had thought was the norm.

However, my room-mate got paired with a VP as his summer mentor, and the VP isn't even in his group, but is an alum of our school. Which one of their situations is normal and how do each of their pairings reflect upon them? Can we read into these matches at all? I just would like to have an idea of what my pairing means whenever it comes around. Thanks in advance!

When I was a summer most got paired with a junior and senior mentor. An analyst to help you figure out the daily procedures of the firm and a senior associate or VP + to help you with more high level issues.

At the end of the day the older analysts sitting around you help you with getting up the learning curve. The relationship with the senior mentor highly depends on their enthusiasm. Mine became pretty close with me and we'd go out for drinks every so often and still keep in touch even though I joined another bank. Others just had one or two lunches during the summer.
