Summer Housing Options

I’ll be living in NYC for the first time this summer and working in the Midtown/Broadway area. I’ve never lived or even visited the city before, so I’d love to hear from those who know ball when it comes to finding a good place to live.

I’m looking for a balance between affordability, a fun city experience, and a manageable commute since I’ll be working very early mornings and (occasionally) late nights. I’ll be making around 110k, so while I can be flexible, I’m not looking for anything over the top. I’ll likely have roommates and am open to apartments, subleases, dorms, or other setups.

What’s the best platform for finding a sublease? Also, what neighborhoods should I be looking toward or avoiding? I assume I should probably stay in Manhattan given the nature of my job, but I’d love to hear if that’s true from those who’ve done it before.

If anyone has advice on common mistakes people make when living in NYC for the first time, I’d really appreciate it.

I lived in SVA student dorms this summer. Great location, great vibes. RIght next to NYU grameracy too. It was only 4600 for 11 weeks and quality was still good. Best experience ever and would highly recommend!

I believe it opens in March.

Lived in NYC for almost 4 years. If you want to combine fun/affordable(as much as possible)/decent transport uptown, absolutely go to east village. One of the best young bar scenes and has some great apartments. Unfortunately cant help w the platforms to find a place, but look there first.

Didnt see last part. Common mistakes i see all the time:

Blowing money at bars. Genuinely a problem, drinks here are not cheap and it is very easy to spend 100+ a night on just yourself. Covers, drinks, ubers, etc, just be smart about it.

Spending way too much on an apt. if you are in IB or any industry that requires long hours, you will not be at your apt much. You are young, you have time to get a nice apt, live below your means.

Not taking the subway. Seems obvious, but holy shit are people dumb. Ubers are not worth it. Get a 130 dollar metrocard (unlimited rides for a month) and delete your rideshare apps.

Buy the citibike subscription. 130 a YEAR for unlimited bike rides. They are all over manhattan, you can take them anywhere and there will be a bike station within a 5 minute walk of wherever you wanna be.

Going to social events is an absolute must. The first ~6 months you are here it will feel impossible to find a solid group of friends outside of work. Go to things that are free and close to you. If you are a catholic/christian some of the best young professional groups in the world are here. St Josephs on sixth ave is a highlight.

Do NOT start dating. NYC is not the place for it unless you are absolutely certain. Too many times ive seen people lose focus and a shit load of money on someone definitionally not worth it.

There are more but those are the most common
