Super worried about federal background check.

Currently an An2 in an M&A group. I was staffed on an A&D deal, and now I have to submit a background check for a DD trip. At first I thought this wasn’t a big deal, but then a VP told me how he got denied for a previous deal for having an underage drinking COLLEGE charge they found out about. This wasn’t a police charge, it was from his school, and they knew.

I was taken by police once in college due to a suicide attempt. I’m in a much better mental state now, but I’m insanely worried about this background check. I was handcuffed for my “safety.” Not sure if I have a record for it, but it’s definitely in my medical records. I also can’t buy a gun because of it, so the feds can definitely find out. If I get denied, will my MD find out why? Or can I just say it was something simple like an underage drinking violation if they aren’t told a reason

I would not worry too much. It may be covered under HIPAA laws. If not, I would not sweat it either. It's not like you committed a crime, and you would be able to explain that to management.

Agree with above. Unless they charged you with a crime, and you would know if they did, you are fine. Being handcuffed or having mental health issues is not a crime. Gun background checks are different as they include mental health checks - this will simply be a criminal background check.

Underage drinking is different - that's a minor in possession charge which is a crime (a stupid crime, but a crime nonetheless). And if they found it on the federal background check it was police, even if just a citation from campus police - they're not checking your school's private disciplinary records lol.

Also, even if it did happen to show up, they would give you a chance to explain it (not through your MD, would be directly) but I would be very confident you are totally fine

So the full story surrounding the VP was that he told me he had to submit the contact info of his friends and one of his friend's mentioned it. Several of my friends know about what happened to me. I suppose if I was asked, I could call my friends and get them to lie for me, but I if they have to say anything officially, I don't want them to feel pressured to lie under oath/affirmation. They're my frat brothers, and I was honestly super surprised when they were supportive instead of weirded out.

And the attempt was very serious and nearly successful. I ended up being in the hospital for a month and had to cancel my sophomore internship due to it. This is a fun  deal too, though I'm not afraid of being denied, I just don't want my team to know. My MD is a nice guy but also a 'no nonsense tolerated' guy, so I feel like anything that impedes my work could be detrimental. I'm planning on staying A2A and switching to Consumer Retail coverage, and so I'll likely never be in this situation again. Just paranoid about this one thing.

That's super unusual and I've never heard of these background checks asking for third-party information. If they ask for references right off the bat, just give them other people who don't know about it perhaps.

Also, having a mental health episode is just not a crime, while the underage drinking/MIP thing is. I still very strongly do not think it will come up (again, not a crime, and also HIPAA, as the other guy mentioned) and if it does, it's not a problem. Being handcuffed in a medical situation is not the same as getting a police citation for a MIP.

They are really making sure you don't have any felonies or robbery charges hiding out there, this is not something that would come under scrutiny.
