Superday Prep Tips for Coverage Lateral Move

I have been extended a superday interview with a Industry coverage team in a top BB. I am currently at a different BB but in a product team within capital markets, and I have never had a coverage-specific superday so I am unsure where to start. Any tips or crash courses I should cover? Since this is a lateral move, I assume they would ask more than the basic internship IB questions which is what most guides I have looked at cover. Any resources or advice would be helpful!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some detailed tips and resources to prepare for a superday interview for a coverage lateral move:

Key Preparation Areas:

  1. Technical Knowledge:

    • Know Your Deals Cold: Be prepared to discuss your deal experience in detail. This includes:
      • Company revenue and EBITDA
      • Selling price
      • Reason for selling
      • Deal complexities
      • Buyer search process
      • Your role on the deal
    • Understand Valuation Methodologies: Have a brief overview of valuation methodologies and be ready to discuss them conceptually.
  2. Behavioral Questions:

    • Fit is Crucial: Since you are already technically qualified, the focus will be on whether you are a good fit for the team. Be yourself but maintain a professional demeanor.
    • Common Behavioral Questions:
      • Discuss your strengths and weaknesses through your internships, projects, and clubs.
      • Explain what excites you about the work you will be doing as an analyst.
  3. Firm-Specific Knowledge:

    • Know the Firm: Research the firm you are interviewing with. Understand their recent deals, culture, and any notable achievements. This shows your genuine interest and helps you stand out.
  4. Market and Industry Trends:

    • Stay Updated: Read the Financial Times (FT) and Wall Street Journal (WSJ) to stay updated on market trends and industry news.
    • Prepare for Market-Related Questions: Be ready to discuss M&A trends, industry trends, capital markets trends, and have a stock pitch or a general deal to discuss.

Recommended Resources:

  1. WSO Behavioral Guide: Comprehensive guide for preparing behavioral questions.
  2. M&I 400 Questions Guide: Especially the section on discussing transaction experience.
  3. WSO Technical Guides: For brushing up on technical knowledge and valuation methodologies.

Additional Tips:

  • Practice Situational Questions: Be prepared for situational questions like handling mistakes in presentations or managing multiple tasks.
  • Rehearse Out Loud: Practice explaining every bullet point on your resume and think of possible follow-up questions.
  • Have Great Questions Ready: Prepare insightful questions to ask the interviewers, showing your interest and engagement.

Example Situational Questions:

  • If a PowerPoint your MD was about to present to a client had a mistake in it, what would you do?
  • If you were given too many tasks at once by your analyst/VP/etc., how would you prioritize and manage them?

By focusing on these areas and utilizing the recommended resources, you will be well-prepared for your superday interview with the coverage team. Good luck!
