Switching from advertising to IB

Fellow Primates,

I am a prospect looking to break into the industry and need some direction. I graduated from a non-target in the midwest with a finance and marketing degree. For the sake of brevity and disclosure, I had internships at a real estate investment firm and a small consulting firm during those years.

After graduating I took a job in the advertising industry and now have a severe case cognitive dissonance. I have come to grips with my regrettable decision and have put myself on the Peter Troob track, Advertising-MBA-IB. My goal is to attend a top MBA program and find work at a MM in the midwest.

My question is this, given my education and primary work experience, would I have better luck getting into M&A group then I would LevFin? Any advice you have on “crossovers” like myself and what group they find the best fit in would be greatly appreciated!
