Tech Start up equity expectations?

Currently a VP in corporate strategy at a large financial institution. I’m interviewing for a corporate dev associate position at a start up. Yes it’s a demotion to my current title but I really believe in the product the start up is building so I’m fine with the demotion.

the only negative that will really impact me for the demotion is the salary. The offer is for $100k base as an associate versus my current salary which is $150k as a VP.

however the start up offers equity, no idea how it works but according to pitch book they’ve raised $150m to date over multiple series funding rounds with a valuation of $1.4bn. they have around 100 employees.

based on this how much equity could I expect?

Most likely to be some equity vesting over several years plus some performance-based equity every year. The cash comp is rather low given your background vs size of the firm, so I believe you’re having good leverage here to negotiate total equity worth far beyond 100% of your cash comp. You can also try be creative, for instance, negotiate cash bonus or salary bump for when the next financing round closes etc.
