Tell new firm you’re reneging for them?

If you talked about receiving a return offer when networking, accept the offer due to its deadline, then start interviewing for the firm you networked with and they ask about the offer … do you lie and say you declined it or just tell them you’re reneging for them?

If the new firm cares about you having reneged and there is a chance the old firm will tell the new firm when you do renege, it is a good idea to tell them. However, some firms don't care and just want the best candidates. If the new firm does ask though, tell them and don't lie. If you think/know the firm won't care, then no need to bring it up.

You should definitely not tell them, reneging is not seen as a good thing but you do have to do what is best for you

I wouldn't saw anything about this, say you got the return (important part) and then steer the conversation away - just say you got a return offer but want to focus on XYZ space instead and ABC firm is of interest. No one is going to ask for details as to whether you accepted or declined it.

And it goes without saying that you should not tell the old firm where you are going, or post it immediately on LinkedIn - wait until you start next summer
