the BEST networking mindset
When initiating conversations with bankers at networking events, is option A, B or C, the best course of action?
A: Go in there and get to know the banker, speak to him as if he is your friend, make him feel comfortable with easy questions he can answer, and try and get moments in the convo where he will actually laugh and enjoy himself. Ask questions related to banking as well, but not too complicated and mind provoking.
B: Utilise my knowledge of IB, and go in with the intention to impress the banker with what I know, e.g. recent trends, what he thinks about XYZ, recent transactions, questions that get the banker thinking
C: Do A first, then do B. Allows the banker to see that you know your stuff, but also someone who can have a laugh and someone good to be around in the office.
I actually enjoy doing A, and when I do B I just feel unnatural and feel like I'm forcing myself to do something I don't particularly want to do.
Your last sentence pretty much answered your question.
