Off cycle internships are pretty light in terms of hours in my experience. Pretty easy to balance.
Get an offer first and then make the decision to take it or not based on estimated hours.

Freshman year, I'd actually focus on club and campus involvement (make friends etc). Can maybe think about off-cycle internship in spring or sophomore fall. Will add caveat that this depends on the school you go to.
