UK Investment Banking to Dubai Investment Banking - Typical Routes?
Profile: UK graduate at top target (Oxbridge/LSE) with an off cycle at a relatively unknown MM firm that I haven't been able to convert and some Asset Management internships (x2 - Due to wanting to go into Asset Management but realised it was not for me in the end.)
How do you get into IBD in Dubai from the UK? Really want to move to the middle east at some point in the next few years, I speak some Arabic but am taking classes to get fluent and I like Shawarma lmao.
Cheers guys.
Transitioning from the UK investment banking scene to Dubai involves a strategic approach, especially given your background and aspirations. Here are some steps and considerations based on insights from the Wall Street Oasis discussions:
Leverage Your Current Experience: Even though your off-cycle experience was at a relatively unknown MM firm, it's crucial to highlight any relevant skills or deals you worked on that can be applicable to the Dubai market. Your asset management internships also add to your profile, showing a breadth of experience in finance.
Networking: This is key in the finance industry, more so when aiming for a geographical transition. Utilize LinkedIn to connect with professionals working in Dubai's IBD sector. Attend finance or investment banking events in the UK where professionals from Dubai might be present. The Wall Street Oasis forums can also be a great place to reach out to people who have made similar moves.
Fluency in Arabic: While not always a requirement, your effort to become fluent in Arabic can significantly enhance your application. It shows commitment to integrating into the regional culture and business practices. Highlight this in your applications and interviews.
Target Firms with Strong Presence in Dubai: Some international banks have a more substantial presence in the Middle East. Research and target these firms, as they might be more open to transferring talent from their UK offices to Dubai.
Apply to MBA Programs: Considering an MBA from a top global institution could also be a strategic move. Some candidates use MBA programs as a pivot to transition into different roles or geographies. Choose programs with strong alumni networks in the Middle East.
Understand the Market: Dubai's investment banking scene can be quite different from the UK's. Familiarize yourself with the key industries and deal types prevalent in the region. This knowledge will be invaluable during interviews and can make your transition smoother.
Recruitment Agencies Specializing in Finance: Some recruitment agencies specialize in placing candidates in international locations, including Dubai. Partnering with such an agency could provide you with insights and access to opportunities not widely advertised.
Remember, persistence and patience are key. Transitioning geographically in investment banking is challenging but entirely possible with the right strategy and mindset. Keep networking, improving your language skills, and tailoring your applications to highlight how your background and aspirations align with the opportunities in Dubai.

Recently finished an internship at an EB in the region and have interviewed for a combination of FT and OC roles at other EBs and BBs there. Will mostly have to do an off-cycle then convert, but some banks (e.g. EVR) take grads as well (only 1 per year though I think). Networking definitely helps, and while speaking Arabic is an advantage, it isn't necessarily required. Good luck
I'll start applying to some of the EB/BBs there for an off-cycle now.
Is it similar to America over there in terms of networking? Ie) Coffee chats, asking people to put you forward etc? Or does HR stop that over there? Appreciate any insights.
Yep it's quite similar in the sense that networking helps - all my FT interviews have been a result of networking, but all my OC interviews (and offer) came from a cold application. If you have a strong CV, you should be able to get OC interviews without networking
Thanks for the insight - really appreciate it!

Isn't it difficult to move back to London or other European geographies if you are in Dubai for extended periods?
