Urgent - MD asked for my resume & cover

Would appreciate urgent response on this - thanks in advance!

I reached out to a MD awhile ago to meet up, but I had to make a trip and didn't have internet access. I just got back and he asked me for my cover letter to fwd. It's been a few days now.

I only had his personal email (not work), so I don't know his address, or whoever's reading's address/name. So what should I do about the cover letter part (where you usually fill in the address of the person you're writing to)? I'm afraid that if I ask him to provide me with an address for the cover, he might take too long to respond because he's busy.

Should I just write the cover without the address section, address it to him... and just note it in the email? Something like 'I didn't have your address, but here's the cover w/o it'. If you could provide it to me I'll be glad to send a revised version with the address?

Thanks everyone!

Billy Ray ValentineI would just address it to him, and look up the firm's main address on the web. I assume you can find that correct? Don't say anything about the address in the email, just sounds stupid. Put the main address for the firm on there and you will be fine.

Agreed - use the firm's main address.

But unlike the previous post, I think that you should address it to the MD rather than "To whom it may concern" if the MD is the person requesting your cover letter. It's not like you are sending it directly to HR - your MD will be the one to receive it first, and while he'll hopefully forward your resume and cover letter to HR, it should still be addressed to him.

Despite my advice, you'll be fine either way. Cover letters have a very tiny impact.

you don't need his address

you are emailing it to him bozo, not mailing it to his country chalet.

so, just don't include an address at the top

and start the letter with "to whom it may concern"

jesus

do you at least know which city he works in? (look at his phone number in the email and google the area code)

then simply goto google maps and for example if its Lazard San Francisco, google map LAzard in San Francisco and paste the address in the cover letter if you want

btw, if you felt this was helpful, pass me a silver banana

a word of caution about this strategy- careful!

seriously though, if it's a boutique like lazard fine, but if it's Citi or DB or any other BB, google maps is going to yield at least 2-3 addresses per metro area. and i don't think you want to include the wrong address.

but once again, you really don't need the address if you are going to email it

I do know the city where he works. And to everyone who says you don't need an address... he's not dealing with the recruiting directly. He just knows there's some laterals happening and he said he'll send it to the recruiter. So I agree that I can address the email to him... but I still don't know which address he's at. I tried looking him up... can't find his address. But I suppose I can use the company's HQ in that city...

Thank you everyone for your advice.

Kind of an updated question related to the above...

I ended up sending my resume/cover to the MD (though kind of late - 1 week later - because I was swamped with work, traveling, no internet during travels, and family ... I know, no excuse, but it happened). And I haven't gotten a response back; it's been 1 wk. The MD did say he'll be quite busy w/ travel for the next few weeks... so can I assume that he hasn't written back because he's swamped, or that he has sent my application to the recruiter and it's now in the recruiter's hands? Or am I dinged for being slow?

I kind of think (or hope) it's one of the former, since the MD seems like a really nice guy (offering to send my resume/CL without me even asking that question...)

What's the proper way to go about this without annoying him? Would it be alright just to email to check up?
