Valuations to IB - Resume Help

Hello - I am currently doing Big 4 valuations and am looking to transition into IB. Has anyone gone though this process in the past? Are there any CV examples that ex valuation professionals have that they used for IB applications?

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from Big 4 Valuation to Investment Banking (IB) is a path that others have indeed taken. Here are some tips and insights for tailoring your resume for IB applications:

  1. Highlight Transferable Skills:

    • Emphasize your financial modeling skills, as valuation work requires a deep understanding of financial statements and the ability to model cash flows and forecast company performance.
    • Showcase your experience with due diligence and how it can apply to the deal-making process in IB.
  2. Technical Proficiency:

    • Be sure to list any technical skills such as proficiency in Excel, financial analysis, and any valuation methodologies you are familiar with (DCF, LBO, comps, etc.).
  3. Deal Experience:

    • If you have worked on pre-transaction valuations or any engagements that had a direct impact on transactions, make sure to detail these experiences.
    • Use specific examples where your work contributed to the success of a deal or supported key decision-making.
  4. Certifications and Education:

    • Mention any relevant certifications such as CFA, which is highly regarded in both valuation and IB.
    • Include your educational background, especially if you have a degree in finance, economics, or a related field.
  5. Networking and Endorsements:

    • Networking is crucial. Connect with professionals who have made the transition and ask for advice or a referral.
    • Include any endorsements or recommendations from colleagues or supervisors that speak to your analytical skills and work ethic.
  6. Tailor Your Resume for Each Application:

    • Research each IB firm you apply to and tailor your resume to highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to that firm's focus or industry specialization.
  7. Professional Formatting:

    • Keep your resume clean, professional, and easy to read. Investment banking is a conservative field, so a traditional format is typically best.

While there may not be a one-size-fits-all CV template for valuation professionals transitioning to IB, these guidelines should help you craft a resume that showcases the most relevant aspects of your experience. It's also recommended to look at sample resumes and perhaps even consider a resume review service that specializes in finance careers to ensure your resume is competitive.
