This is the US. I think that's for employment verification, not a reference check. When specifically asked to give the details of old supervisor, any way to make the situation better?

In the most banks, in Europe, there is a general HR email that should be used for giving references. In theory, it should be also specified in your termination letter how you can get references. I do not think they need to be personal. Also - don’t get worried about getting laid off / fired - just keep pushing - sooner or later you will find the job.

I was asked plenty of time to give name of supervisor and employment verification always had to in the end use the generic letter. There is no obligation on your old supervisor to verify you, but your employer has (even in the USA - checked with a friendly attorney) so just check your termination letter or check through the graduate recruitment team if you have any connectivity there

Don’t stress - if you’ve just lost your job bc of layoffs or underperformance as an analyst, people usually still give you a good reference. You likely just graduated school not long ago, it’s not like you’d be expected to be fantastic at the job anyways

I got laid off in the beginning of this year as an analyst. I had several references by the time I found my new job a couple months ago
