Visitors to the office?

What's the policy in investment banking for bringing visitors to the office? I remember when I was networking, some contacts would meet me at a neutral location like a coffee shop. But a few analysts or associates or MDs brought me up to the bullpen to chill and talk and possibly meet people. This seemed to be done very nonchalantly. I always felt that it was kind of weird that I was allowed up there because I would assume that there would be confidential documents that might be laying on a desk that could potentially tip off a visitor to a merger or other event.

Could someone potentially have their parent or girlfriend or friend visit the bullpen if they wanted to? I know some people who have done this but is it typically done with a lot of security clearances first? I know I've heard of some people having their girlfriends come to hang out with them in the office while working on documents in the evening.

A relative / gf for a quick visit around 8pm when most MDs are gone? Sure
A friend at 3pm when everyone is at the office? Wouldn't do it

Ok, what's the protocol for that? Do you have to get security clearance or something? If someone's working on a merger or something and there is a CIM sitting out on a desk, or there is chatter in the bullpen about a company that's getting bought, I could see it being a big deal that other people were let in to the bullpen.

  1. Don't all the projects have code names anyway?
  2. I've visited people in their office and some have taken me to only the kitchen/common area while others have graciously taken me to their bullpen and introduced me to their fellow analysts. it seems more based on the person's personality and comfort level with you than other factors.
