Walking Pad in IB

Hey all,

I’m starting FT in a couple months and am hoping to maintain some healthy habits despite being in an office for 12+ hours a day. As such, I was looking at purchasing a walking pad / treadmill to put under my desk.

All the desks in our office can be converted to standing desks so that won’t be an issue, and I imagine my group would be fine with me having it as well. My only questions are whether they are super loud for people around the office, and if they are distracting/uncomfortable to use while working. Does the “hopping” around make it difficult to hit the right keys on your keyboard efficiently at all?

I’m aiming to use it for maybe ~2 hours a day and not when in meetings so I don’t seem like I’m moving all over.

Pulling out the walking pad in the bullpen as a first year is uh… bold. They’re definitely a little noisy too depending on how fast you have it set and I’d imagine you’d catch a lot of attention from seniors i.e. “Does that fucking kid have a walking pad?” I guess certain personalities could pull it off, but speaking in broad strokes if you had a walking pad at your desk I’d think you’re a little weird.

All that being said, I actually have a walking pad myself but keep it at home (which is what you should do too). It can be kind of obnoxious when cranking through XLS, but sometimes when fiddling around in PPT or just doing something less intense it can be great. To your point about hitting the right keystrokes, I definitely move noticeably slower when I’m walking, but that’s just the trade-off.

Appreciate the response. And interesting to hear your thoughts on this, I definitely wouldn't have thought it to be so out there in terms of norms. I guess it might be office-dependent too, my office is quite small (less than 20 people) and generally not strict about attire either.

I agree it would be best to just keep it at home but unfortunately we can only WFH on weekends so wouldn't do much benefit there. I think I might just wait till I've started and bring it up to a couple people to see what they think.
