Wells Fargo NYC vs HL NYC TMT

Is WF as a generalist better than HL TMT, I know im going to be in NYC for both SA 2027 roles. Should I care about the fact that WF has worked on some really big deals this year?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to consider:

  1. Wells Fargo NYC (Generalist):

    • Wells Fargo has a reputation for being conservative in its credit culture, which can limit exposure to certain leveraged finance deals. However, it has been involved in some significant deals recently, which could provide strong deal experience.
    • A key consideration is Wells Fargo's location placement process. Historically, there have been challenges with HR-driven group and city placements, with a significant number of positions ending up in Charlotte rather than NYC. Since you’ve confirmed NYC placement, this concern may not apply to you.
  2. Houlihan Lokey NYC (TMT):

    • HL’s TMT group is known for its strong focus on middle-market transactions. If you’re looking for a more specialized experience in TMT, HL could provide deeper exposure to this sector.
    • HL is also highly regarded for its restructuring practice, which could offer additional opportunities to learn and network within the firm.
  3. Key Factors to Weigh:

    • Deal Size vs. Specialization: Wells Fargo may offer exposure to larger deals as a generalist, while HL TMT will provide more focused experience in the tech, media, and telecom space.
    • Exit Opportunities: Both firms have solid exit opportunities, but HL’s specialization in TMT could be advantageous if you’re targeting roles in tech-focused private equity or corporate development.
    • Culture and Fit: Consider the culture and work-life balance at both firms. WSO threads often highlight differences in team dynamics and hours, which could influence your experience.

Ultimately, your decision should align with your long-term career goals. If you value broader exposure and larger deals, Wells Fargo might be the better choice. If you’re set on a TMT-focused career, HL’s specialization could be more beneficial.

better pay at WF

HL you will get more M&A experience, WF you will likely work on much larger deal. HL's deal size is on the lower millions, but HL's deal count is even greater than GS. Both are great offers
