What is Business Research and is it Useful?

I recently switched from STEM to Math and Finance (With Comp Sci major potentially and energy specialization), and am hoping to go into IBanking. I go to Tulane, so I know it isn't exactly a target for many firms, but plan on going into energy, so there's that. I was just wondering, how useful is doing business research as an undergrad and is it worth it in differentiating me when applying for jobs. Thanks
