What jobs to transfer from to get into IB?
I'm currently a student at a non-target school (CUNY Baruch). I'm doing my best to get a very high GPA and then transfer to a target school. Worst case scenario, if I do not get in to a target school, what other jobs could I take to be able to get into IB? Just to preface, my final goal is PE, but it seems the traditional path is to do IB -> PE, and it seems getting into IB from a non-target school is very difficult. Hence, I was wondering if there were any other positions I could take that would allow me to get into IB.
What year are you at Baruch? I've been to many many IB events in NYC for kids at Baruch. You may not be at a target school but your in a target city. Leverage that.
Freshman. What would you suggest I do?
I went to a non-target in Illinois and would sometimes go to events at Northwestern or UChi and politely introduce myself at the end of the events.
You have the advantage of location. With enough networking and effort you do not need a target school and could break into IB directly. Just relentlessly work to build relationships.
To answer your question, some non-IB jobs that would provide you with a chance to lateral would include valuation, transaction advisory, consulting, etc.

Sure, if you simply put in the effort you will find people willing to help you. You should use the following for networking:
Start pursuing all of these avenues, not just to find a job, but simply to get to know people. As you meet people, share with them your career interests and you will be amazed how people are eager to help you when you are genuine and build a relationship.
Also, set up coffee, lunch, and golf meetings with as many people in NYC as you can. Reach out on LinkedIn, etc.
You are early try to get your feet wet with different freshman exploratory programs and build your resume to be competitive for sophomore opportunities. Resume + GPA is key.
What would you suggest for resume building and explatory opportunities?
JPMorgan etc. Most banks have some sort of freshman experience program. Resume building - join club take on leadership roles.

I think you should try and leverage your schools network. Try to find Baruch alumni on LinkedIn and start reaching out. Like others said, you’re in a target city and there are bound to be people from your school in IBD. Don’t underestimate the power of networking.
If your end goal is PE you can always go the ops end and end up functioning in an operating partner type of role. Very different path but food for thought if your end goal is PE not IB.
What sort of job would that be?
IB from Baruch is definitely doable.
Maintain a 3.5+ gpa at baruch, but get it up as high as possible. Join IMG (they manage baruch's endowment fund). You can learn a lot there Join a business frat (DSP, etc)
Baruch finance classes are really tough but don't prepare you for recruiting, so start learning finance on your own so that you dont bomb interviews.
