What makes IB difficult?
I’ll be doing my first internship in IB this summer and I’ve heard some people say you often don’t use your brain or «a trained monkey could do it ». I’m also aware it’s very challenging, so what makes the job hard?
- very high quantity of pretty simple tasks make it hard to stay on top of everything
- the work is actually much harder than some people say and being insightful is the challenge
- large range of skills required (analytical, numerical, communication, organisation etc.)
- accumulated fatigue / stress
- combination of the above / something else
- nothing, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life ;)
Honestly its the ppl. The tasks themselves can be done by a monkey but the ppl are extremely demanding
This is the correct answer.
The job itself is simple and honestly, pretty stupid. The egos and undiagnosed sociopathy are the worst part, but honestly...I'm not even sure those characteristics are exclusive to IB.
The number and unpredictability of the hours
Go do anything else. It’s the worst job for an 8 year period. You eat shit non stop until you make it
People! Unreasonable deadlines, total lack of management / coaching skills amongst Directors and MDs, and most importantly lack of common sense amongst those that not every little scrap of potential deal should be chased
Navigating the politics at the office
the people, the personalities, the unpredictability, the fake sense of urgency, the useless work you spend tons of time on,
the thought that you're getting orders from people that aren't as bright as you thought
IB is full of toxic / frustrated people, that’s why it is so hard (well actually maybe it’s 10% of people but that is enough to make your life miserable… All you need is working with 1 toxic individual and you are fucked)
What's difficult is I don't fucking like accounting.
Why in the world are so many Gen Z schlubs horny af to go into banking despite absolutely hating and/or sucking at accounting? It makes no sense to me.
I'm in a debt financing capital markets team actually
the hardest thing is honestly the learning curve at the beginning. you basically just wont know how to do basic things and will need a lot of guidance. people say that you're not actually adding value to your team until 6 months on the job.
its also pretty easy to get burnt out and feel like your brain is fried looking at a screen for so long. you also deal with a lot of tough personalities, id say that 1/5 people where are work are just complete douches. the best thing is to just stay mentally and physically in check through a good diet and exercise/support in your personal life. it can be easy to fall of the rails at work if you dont keep your personal life in check.
If you don't like the work, the hours make it very tough
