What next after 6 months of banking?
Like a lot of people that are posting on this site, I'm burned out at this point. I don't think I have to rehash what everyone has said on this topic but it's becoming more and more clear with each day that banking isn't the future for me and neither are the things like PE or HF that would come after the two years in banking.
The question I have is, what are my options from here? Not going to lie, I've spent the last couple years drinking the cool-aid and haven't paid much mind to what a path outside of the IB-> PE -> Bschool default setting looks like, but its definitely clear to me now that I have to make a pivot.
For what its worth, I really enjoy the strategy aspect of banking. I really like hearing consultants or PE professionals talking about how they plan to grow/optimize their business or even just talking out in real terms what's driving a model. With that in mind, my initial thoughts lean towards a role in corporate development or strategy & operations role but from the job postings I've seen, it looks like those are mostly for post-banking people. Are there other jobs that might fit this preference set or other things that I could transition to so early on?
I'd appreciate any help people could give at this point as I'm pretty underwater and just looking for something else to look towards.
You can and should be applying to those jobs with your experience
Could you elaborate on what types of companies would be more flexible and take people with less than a year of banking experience when they say they want people with 2-4 years of experience in the posting? Thanks
Bump
Least experience you need is probably a year to transition into those roles. Almost impossible to get anything with under a year of banking
You could join a later-stage pre-IPO startup in a junior strategy role, absolutely doable even with 6m of experience, will need to do more hustling though. Just find companies you are interested in and have openings and reach out to the teams via LinkedIn
That makes sense, do you have any tips on how to screen for companies by area/sector?
You could try doing a screen on CapIQ, or check online for lists of "fast growing companies" in said industry. Another option could be to ask someone in the industry for more guidance
Why not pivot to consulting? Have seen analysts make the switch.
I definitely have thought about potentially making the change to a consulting track. How would you recommend making that switch, is it just reaching out to alums and asking if they have spots available?
I made the switch into consulting at the year mark and that's how I navigated it and another friend did it the same way. I was too burnt out to figure out the process for MBB, but interviewed for and landed at a Tier 2 and I'm quite happy with the decision.
