Whats the deal with GS Assett Management group
I have heard it being mentioned as a hedge fund...Is that really the case...I heard the pay is high too...But is it really that different from general Investment Management??Any insights will be appreciated
Not a hedge fund. Pay is not high either. Just like IMD anywhere, perhaps worse performing from what i've heard.
their hedge fund unit was down for the first year ever last year, and previously got returns of 55% and 33%. It is essentially the best group within GSAM from what I have heard.
GS Asset Management is not the same as gs global alpha (their fund)
Global Alpha is part of the GSAM unit; both are located at 32 Old Slip (rather than at 85 Broad). However, I don't know how one would go about actually working in the Global Alpha unit. It's not a "group" like in IB, where some percentage of the class will just be assigned to Global Alpha.
My guess is that they do their own recruiting, and that just applying to GSAM is not the way in. I'd also venture to guess that they don't recruit undergrads. Global Alpha is a quant fund, and most undergrads who seek a job in finance aren't sufficiently quantitative for this kind of work.
