What's the deal with those who actively grow their LinkedIn following?

Basically what title says. LinkedIn pet peeve rant/I'm genuinely confused by this. What's with the people on LinkedIn who are actively trying to grow followers?

I understand the power of networking (broke into top BB IBD on the back of networking), but sending out mass connection requests without ever having spoken/messaged 90% of these people and then spending all day posting quasi-inspiration, buzzword filled business bullsh!t confuses me. What is the goal for these people? Like at least with growing a following on Instagram you can transition to OF and make $$$.

But LinkedIn? The platform is already filled with enough self-congratulating, virtue-signaling posts from the "agree?", "honored to be incoming...", and etc. cringe content.

I get lots of requests from consultant types (the perpetually quasi-employed consultant, not the MBB kind of consultant) and "executive coaches." I am not an executive...

Some people may think that if the shit hits the fan, having a larger network on LinkedIn can only help.

Not to hijack the thread but I think it's freaking annoying that randoms try to connect with you on LinkedIn without ever leaving a note. Ever since getting a junior year internship I've had like 300 people I've just declined.

Why the hell would I add someone I don't know unless you have a stated purpose for connecting with me? Like... what do I get out of connecting with you if we aren't going to actually chat? Are you going to reach out to me, or just... have me in your LinkedIn connections?

It's usually the latter (just being connected). If you're going to try to connect with someone that you don't know, send a note and ask to chat over the phone or something.

Still in college but this. I agree - I get a lot of randoms but what the OP said - like these people have 5,000+ followers and it’s just like random. I used to accept but now I’m trying to delete cause it clogs my feed + I wanna have legit connections I could network w.
