When Applying online with a investment bank
Hi all,
I graduated with my bba in the Fall '10 trying to apply for a 2012 program with a bank's online site. At the very end it has questions with a drop down bar asking if you expected to graduate between 2011-2012. Do I just say say yes, so that my resume isn't electronically filtered out?
No, that would be lying. To be honest, just avoid going down that path. Even if it isn't electronically filtered out, somebody is definitely going to notice and not appreciate what you did.
If I were you, as a non-traditional applicant, I would try to break in using "non-traditional" means. In other words, start networking. I know that is not what you want to hear, but lying about your graduation date on an online app only puts you back where you started or worse.
Agreed with beta. It's not worth getting balled over.
Start networking with everyone you know and everyone they know. You would be surprised at what you can come up with.
Best of luck!
WHY?
Because that's how useful online applications are. Hit the pavement: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=mergers+and+inquisitions+networking

This.
You feel good after 6 straight hours of submitting applications online, but it is a complete waste of time. Banks post analyst positions to be completed in conjunction with those who drop their resumes during OCR. It makes the process easier for HR when setting up 2nd round interviews.
Thanks guys, appreciate all the feedback.
I mean honestly has anyone ever gotten an interview with an online application that wasn't tied to OCR?
I come from a complete non-target and all the interviews I've gotten have been through contacts, linked-in alumni (premium subscription is the best investment I've ever made), and cold emailing; try one of those, much better use of your time.
I have. I would say ~1.5% success rate.
That's comforting to know that they have actual humans check the inbox for those. Is that for FT?
Yes, a small boutique. Applied through Doostang actually. I'm sure 80% of the online apps I sent out were completely ignored. Also received an invite to a networking session with one of my online apps (went through the company website).
I've gotten interviews through online applications. I think probably like 3 or 4 out of 150+ applications I've submitted. Networking is wayyy more efficient.
Btw OP, like everyone else said, I wouldn't do that. Someone will eventually find out you lied and you'll get dinged at one point or another. If you've graduated, you're almost never going to interview with the undergrads. I graduated around the same time as you and was trying to break in this recruiting season, no success with OCR except with one MM firm. And that was only because I sent a personal email to the person that posted the listing and he happened to be a really cool guy. Almost all firms won't even consider you, not because your resume sucks, but just because that's the hiring policy.
