When/How to Start Networking for Group Placement?

2026 SA in NYC at a mid-tier BB, and I would like to get a good group and not fall behind the rest of my peers in placement. I know this question gets asked a lot on this forum, yet there isn't really a clear answer; in your opinion, when is the best time to start networking for group placement? I am currently in the city for an internship right now, so would reaching out (to both new and existing connections) during the summer months and ask to meet in-person be a good idea, or is that too early/unconventional?

Additionally, what is the best way to reach out to analysts/associates for these groups? Just the same way as traditional networking for recruitment? Any guidance is appreciated.
